AI Unveils Ancient Konkan Petroglyphs: Maharashtra's Quest for UNESCO Heritage (2026)

The Konkan region of Maharashtra is a treasure trove of prehistoric petroglyphs, and the state government is leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to unravel their mysteries. This ambitious project, funded with a substantial allocation of Rs 15 crore, aims to scientifically analyze, classify, and interpret the origin and cultural significance of these ancient carvings. With an estimated timeframe of four years, the initiative promises to shed light on a fascinating chapter of India's history, potentially bolstering the country's bid for UNESCO World Heritage status.

The petroglyphs, discovered across 107 villages in the Konkan region, are stone carvings of animal figures and humanoids, primarily featuring turtles, elephants, peacocks, and rhinoceroses. Dating back to between 20,000 BC and 10,000 BC, these carvings predate the Harappan civilization, making them a significant archaeological find. The absence of horse and bull figurines in the carvings has sparked curiosity among experts, leading to the conclusion that they were created during the pre-agricultural and pre-historic eras, specifically in the Mesolithic period.

The project's significance lies not only in its potential to reveal the cultural and historical context of the carvings but also in its innovative use of technology. The state government has appointed IIT Pravartak, the technology innovation hub of IIT Madras, to carry out a digital assessment and documentation of the petroglyphs. This includes high-resolution aerial photography using drones and AI-powered pattern recognition to identify and restore eroded portions of the carvings.

One of the key objectives of the assessment is to determine the cultural etymology of the figurines. While carbon dating is typically used to determine the age of materials, it is not feasible for coastal cities like Maharashtra due to the erosion caused by heavy rainfall and the geomagnetic properties of the rocks. Instead, experts will meticulously analyze the figurines, comparing them with petroglyphs from other civilizations, such as Mesopotamia, to gain insights into the tools used and the reasoning behind each figure.

The project also aims to explore the folklore and traditions of the local tribal belts, as the drawings may provide clues about the subcontinent's flora and fauna during that era. By engaging with local tribes and community leaders, the initiative seeks to understand the cultural context surrounding the petroglyphs.

The road to UNESCO World Heritage status is a complex process involving the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Government of India, state governments, and UNESCO. The petroglyphs are already on India's Tentative List, and a detailed dossier must be prepared, including historical and archaeological significance, comparative analysis, conservation status, legal protection measures, management and tourism plans, maps, boundaries, and buffer zones.

The appointment of IIT Madras for this study is a strategic move, as it aims to find and record all relevant factors for the dossier, targeting a submission for UNESCO status by 2030. This project not only promises to unlock the secrets of the Konkan petroglyphs but also showcases the potential of AI and technology in archaeological research, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past and the power of human creativity and ingenuity.
